Client Pitch
When opportunity presents itself.
I was passing by my coworkers that were discussing how to stitch a book cover. One mentioned that a saddle-stitch might achieve the effect they wanted the other said an overcast stitch might work, I chimed in and said "why not try a blanket stitch?" From there I was brought on the project with my past experience of having embroidered pillow cases as a child. I'm questioning myself now why I ever stopped, but after this project I found a renewed love for needle and thread.
This craft work was for a client take away at the end of an agency pitch. Consistency was key. The cover I was customizing was to go on three books, one to be gifted to the client at the end of the meeting and the other two sent by pigeon carrier to others in California.
An exciting challenge was laying out individual letterpress stamps, embossing a raised leather square with a quote.
The quote, chosen by the creative director, was picked from the book On The Road written by Jack Kerouac. This creative decision tied in with the content of the book which was Arnold's creative teams challenge to drive across country in two BMWs. From Boston to LA.
The lettering was new tool I had yet to have an opportunity to engage with. I proceeded to construct a means of centering the quote and letter spacing by designing first on screen then printing the template and overlaying it within the leather block. I then adjusted by eye and hand the correct positioning of the individual stamp. Hammered with two firm dings the leather was permanently embossed.
Final Touches
To complete the look the book was then wrapped, bound and tied with leather, which was a creative link to an important aspect of this luxury car brand.
Designed with passion, constructed with precision and handled with care, the client loved this take away and the team received a glowing email.
